The IMCF World Championship held at Montemor-o-Velho in Portugal over 26-29 May 2016 was a unique adventure as our national captain, Hylton Kleynhans was the only one who could make the trip.
Although longsword is his speciality, our captain managed to progress the furthest that South Africa ever has in the Sword and Shield discipline. Defeating Portugal, Canada, Belgium, Spain and Germany, our captain faced the Frenchman for the Bronze medal. After a very close fight against France, and 2 days of fighting, our captain had placed 4th and is now in the top 5 Sword and Shield fighters in the world. He joins the same esteemed company as Poland and England! Well done Captain, you have done us all, and South Africa, very proud. As he was our lone warrior at the event, he made a great impression as both a fighter, a scholar and a gentleman – next year he won’t take it easy on them!
